Q1. Creating Expensive Red Tape for Alberta Businesses.

Do you support the Government of Alberta taking increased control over immigration for the purposes of decreasing immigration to more sustainable levels, prioritizing economic migration and giving Albertans first priority on new employment opportunities?

For the first time in modern history, temporary and permanent migration intakes have dropped sharply, resulting in net quarterly population declines. This question is out of date and will only create more red tape for our economy as the Government of Alberta would proceed with creating a whole new layer of bureaucracy to manage immigration. Vote no.

Q2. Banning healthcare, education and social services for immigrants.

Do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law mandating that only Canadian citizens, permanent residents and individuals with an Alberta-approved immigration status will be eligible for provincially-funded programs, such as health care, education and other social services?

This question would bar immigrants without approval from the Government of Alberta from having healthcare, education or other social services. This will punish refugees, newcomers to Canada and delay learning for students already delayed in their education. This policy will benefit no one, increase costs of administrating programs and be a costly barrier for all Albertans. Clearly, vote no.

Q3. Banning refugees and immigrants from social supports.

Assuming that all Canadian citizens and permanent residents continue to qualify for social support programs as they do now, do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law requiring all individuals with a non-permanent legal immigration status to reside in Alberta for at least 12 months before qualifying for any provincially-funded social support programs?

Current rules already require newcomers to establish permanent residence and live in Alberta for most of the year to maintain coverage—adding new layers of status verification just creates administrative delays for everyone. This policy benefits no one, introduces new red tape and is hostile to a growing, expanding economy. Vote no.

Q4. Charging fees for healthcare and education.

Assuming that all Canadian citizens and permanent residents continue to qualify for public health care and education as they do now, do you support the Government of Alberta charging a reasonable fee or premium to individuals with a non-permanent immigration status living in Alberta for their and their family’s use of the health care and education systems?

This is a question proposed by Premier Danielle Smith and the United Conservative Party. This policy position would have fees charged for use of our healthcare system and education: creating barriers for access for a population that is already on the margins.

Not only will this policy introduce new bureaucracy, in creating immigration-status questions at every point of entry in our healthcare and education system, it will delay and disturb access to critical services in emergencies and for the education of the youth in our province. Vote no.

Q5. Restricting Voter Eligibility for Seniors, Students & Locals.

Do you support the Government of Alberta introducing a law requiring individuals to provide proof of citizenship, such as a passport, birth certificate or citizenship card, to vote in an Alberta provincial election?

This is a question proposed by Premier Danielle Smith and the United Conservative Party. This would bar the practice of vouching, use of utility bills, gun permits and otherwise from allowing citizens to vote in municipal and provincial elections, making it just that much harder to vote in our electoral process. This will push seniors, students and our neighbours out of the electoral process, when we need to hear from them just as much as others in our democracy.

We need more people to participate in our elections. This question should be sent to the recycling bin. Vote no.

Q6. Adding red tape and patronage to judicial appointments.

Do you support the Government of Alberta working with the governments of other willing provinces to amend the Canadian Constitution to have provincial governments, and not the federal government, select the justices appointed to provincial King’s Bench and Appeal courts?

❌ Recommendation: Vote No.

This is a question proposed by Premier Danielle Smith and the United Conservative Party. There is a non-partisan, committee-structure that supports the appointments of judges to preserve judicial independence.

This proposition aims to erase that fundamental tradition, born out of a 1,000 year history of common law and jurisprudence that we have inherited from the nations that helped found Canada. It is a politicization of our judicial system and introduces new red tape and patronage to our justice system. Vote no.

Q7. Silencing Alberta’s Regional Voice & Abolishing the Senate

Do you support the Government of Alberta working with the governments of other willing provinces to amend the Canadian Constitution to abolish the unelected federal Senate?

Over the last ten years, our senate has been transformed. Gone are the days of partisan appointments: instead, a non-partisan committee reviews and shares with the Prime Minister high quality picks for representatives to join our senate. Great Albertans like award-winning journalist Paul Simons; former Banff mayor Karen Sorensen; noted academic Dr. Kristopher Wells; civic leader and convener of conversations on reconciliation and resilience Patti LaBoucane-Benson; advocate for the arts, Calgary Stampede and Calgary business Daryl Fridhandler, all speak to issues of national importance with an Albertan perspective in a functional and empowered senate free of base partisanship.

• Abolishing the Senate silences Alberta’s voice in Parliament. The Senate guarantees regional balance so Western interests aren’t ignored.
• The Senate acts as a vital check on government overreach, reviewing legislation through independent, merit-based expertise rather than strict party discipline.
• Abolishing the Senate requires unanimous consent from all 10 provinces—a multi-year constitutional battle that wastes time and resources on symbol politics instead of healthcare, housing, and the economy.

Reject thirty years of narrow-minded grievance politics. Vote no.

Q8. Ending Federal Programs in Alberta

“Do you support the Government of Alberta working with the governments of other willing provinces to amend the Canadian Constitution to allow provinces to opt out of federal programs that intrude on provincial jurisdiction such as health care, education and social services, without a province losing any of the associated federal funding for use in its social programs?”

Q9. Veto on Federal Government Legislation

Do you support the Government of Alberta working with the governments of other willing provinces to amend the Canadian Constitution to better protect provincial rights from federal interference by giving a province’s laws dealing with provincial or shared areas of constitutional jurisdiction priority over federal laws when the province’s laws and federal laws conflict?
